No bells, no whistles, no fancy equipment required. If you workout from home with little to no space and equipment, then give this bodyweight warm up a try.
Many people just use a treadmill or cycle to warm up. This is fine, however I like to incorporate upper body movements in all three planes of motion as well.
Indeed, warm up activities are limitless so this is just one example of a warm up you can perform without any equipment at all.
Some of the exercises may be considered a bit advanced so it may not be for everyone. However, most exercises can always be 'regressed', or substituted for another exercise, or simply dropped from the sequence. So apply caution and be sure to adjust the warm up to levels commensurate with your own physical abilities and training experience!
I've included movements that are very good at mobilizing the hip complex and are useful for any sport that involves a lot of running. Some exercises integrate whole body involvement to train for strength. Some are just multi-planar movements to train for increased flexibility. Others are specific for improved acceleration or deceleration of the core region such as the Medicine Ball Patterns. They all, in one way or another, work on upper or lower body strength, balance, and coordination.
Performed as a circuit, this routine does a pretty good job of warming up the body prior to your strength training workout.
If you're fairly conditioned and you find you can run through the sequence without breaking into a slight sweat, either increase the number of reps I've suggested or repeat the sequence an additional time or two.
Conversely, if you find the warm up too difficult, cut down the number of sequences, or reduce the number of reps, or cut out an exercise or two. Remember, the warm up is intended to prepare your body for the more strenuous parts of the workout ahead-- not fatigue it!
Whether you warm up with or without equipment, everyone-- young or old, trained or untrained, needs a proper warm up! It's the perfect introduction to a great workout.
If you workout from home, you can warm up without equipment.
